Back in the 70s, when disco was groovy and bell bottoms were in vogue, two brilliant African American pharmacists, Colin Macbryin and Phil Mackenzie, had a vision. Armed with a passion for natural hair and a keen eye for innovation, they set out to revolutionise the hair care game. They established M&M Products in Atlanta. Sta-Sof-Fro Oil Sheen and Comb Out Spray was the world’s first product designed to soften natural black hair for easy combing and style with no shrinking or tangling.
Fun Fact:
The original products were targeted towards black males. Seeing the hype around perms and cold waves, the two founders realised that African women also needed hair products that worked for their fabulous locks. And you know what they did? They decided to extend their range to include women. Talk about game-changers! Before you knew it, that little company they started was on the fast track to becoming a big shot in the world of natural hair care. Their motto, “People who know you and care,” underpinned everything the company stood and still stands for. And in 1975, Amka came knocking, and they obtained the license to manufacture and sell Sta-Sof-Fro in Southern Africa, and the rest, as they say, is history.
